She married famous guitarist Les Paul on December 29, 1949, and they had three children together before divorcing in 1964. Mary also married Donald Hatfield. Tragically, a daughter born prematurely in 1954 passed away just four days after her birth.

Mary started her singing career at a high school radio station and later played guitar. Her breakthrough came when she appeared on the Jimmy Wakely Radio Show, guest-starring with Gene Autry in 1944.
