Mary Hemingway passed away on November 26, 1986, in New York City. At the time of her death, her estate was valued at $3 million. She left a substantial portion of her estate to causes such as Meharry Medical School, The United Negro College Fund, and the American Museum of Natural History, as well as $200,000 to the Ernest Hemingway Foundation for a prize for unpublished fiction writers.
