Matthew Garber was a British actor who is best known for his roles in “Mary Poppins,” “The Gnome-Mobile,” and “The Three Lives of Thomasina.” He was born on March 25, 1956, in Stepney, London, England.

Personal and Family Life

Matthew Garber was born to Margot and L.L. Garber, both of whom were involved in theater but not widely recognized. He had a younger brother named Fergus. Garber began his acting career as a child and quickly gained attention for his talents, particularly by actor Roy Dotrice.

Career

Garber’s acting career began when he was cast in the Disney film “The Three Lives of Thomasina” in 1963. He became well-known for his role as Michael Banks in the beloved film “Mary Poppins,” which was released in 1964. His final film role was in “The Gnome-Mobile” in 1967, after which he returned to focus on his education.

Death and Legacy

Matthew Garber tragically died on June 13, 1977, at the young age of 21 due to hemorrhagic necrotizing pancreatitis, a complication from hepatitis contracted during a trip to India. His ashes were scattered at St. Marylebone Crematorium in London. In 2004, he was honored posthumously as a Disney Legend.
