He battled asthma as a child, believing that playing the bugle in the Boys’ Brigade helped his recovery. Initially interested in teaching, he shifted towards acting after national service, eventually training at Glasgow College of Dramatic Art.

Roëves had a successful career on stage and screen, starting with his role as Martin in “The Fighting Prince of Donegal.” He gained prominence by playing significant characters in various films and television series, including “Doctor Who” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” He was married twice, first to Scottish actress Jan Wilson, with whom he had a daughter, Sarah-Anne, and later to Vanessa Rawlings-Jackson until his death.
