Meredith was born on a military base, as her father, Gordon MacRae, was stationed there. She started acting at a young age, appearing in the film By the Light of the Silvery Moon with her father. She attended UCLA and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English. Throughout her life, she was married three times, first to Richard Berger, then to actor Greg Mullavey with whom she had a daughter, Allison, and finally to Philip Neal in 1995.

Meredith gained fame through her leading roles in two beloved sitcoms during the 1960s, Petticoat Junction and My Three Sons. She also guest-starred in many shows like Fantasy Island and Magnum, P.I., and appeared in various films. Her career included a short stint in music, showcasing her mezzo-soprano voice.
