She was married to Lawrence Nathan Earls from November 15, 1909, until his death on June 10, 1954, and they had one child together. She grew up with a family that included her father, Franklin Pierce Ireland, and her mother, Carrie Lenora Clark. Merie had notable relatives in the entertainment industry, including her first cousin, actor Clem Bevans.

Earle had an interest in performing from a young age, and she was discovered by a talent agent while acting in a Methodist church play. Her first paid role was as a model in a Polaroid advertisement.
