Mikhail Astangov was an American actor known for his remarkable performances in theater and film. He is best recognized for his roles in “Cyrano de Bergerac,” “Hamlet,” and various Soviet war dramas.

Personal and Family Life

Mikhail Astangov, born Mikhail Fyodorovich Ruzhnikov, came into the world on November 3, 1900, in Warsaw, which was part of the Russian Empire at the time. His father worked with the Imperial Russian railroad. Throughout his life, he was married to Elena Adamaytis-Astangova, but their relationship ended in divorce. His work in acting began in 1920 with the Theatrical Studio of Feodor Chaliapin Sr.

Career

Astangov’s career took off as he performed in various cities including Leningrad and Odessa from 1923 to 1930. His significant contribution was with the Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow from 1945 until his death in 1965. He was recognized as a People’s Actor of the USSR in 1955 and was honored with three Stalin prizes for his outstanding roles in Soviet war dramas.

Death and Legacy

Mikhail Astangov passed away on April 20, 1965, in Moscow due to complications from appendicitis. He left behind a legacy as a legendary stage actor, remembered for his captivating performances. Astangov was laid to rest in the Convent Cemetery of Donskoy Monastery in Moscow, where his contributions to the arts continue to be celebrated.
