Milly Vitale was born on July 16, 1933, in Rome, Italy. She was the daughter of conductor Riccardo Vitale and choreographer Natasha Shidlowski. In October 1960, she married Vincent Hillyer, an American with previous ties to Iranian royalty. They had two children together: Edoardo LeRoy and Vincent Lee.
