Mimi Fariña was born as Margarita Mimi Baez on April 30, 1945, in Palo Alto, California. She was the younger sister of famous folk singer Joan Baez, and she grew up in a multicultural family with Scottish and Mexican roots. Mimi married musician Richard Farina in 1963 when she was just 17, and they formed a successful musical partnership before his tragic death.
Career
Following Richard’s death, Mimi continued her music career and married radio DJ Milan Melvin in 1968, although this marriage did not last long. She performed alongside her sister Joan Baez and participated in various folk music activities while also engaging in improv comedy in San Francisco. In 1974, she established “Bread and Roses,” an organization dedicated to bringing music and entertainment to those in hospitals and prisons, which has continued to flourish.
Death and Legacy
Mimi Fariña passed away on July 18, 2001, from lung cancer at her home in Mount Tamalpais, California.
