He married Judith Whitaker in 1957, and together they had three children. McCallum also had a career as a recreational therapist in a mental hospital, which he claimed helped him understand acting better.

After moving to England, McCallum began working in radio and theater before landing a seven-year contract with ABC Television in 1957. He gained significant attention for his performance in the prison drama The Last Mile. Despite his promising start, he never fully realized his potential in film and television.

Neil McCallum passed away on April 26, 1976, in Reading, Berkshire, England. He suffered a brain hemorrhage and collapsed at his home in Newbury before being taken to the hospital.
