Nicolai Ghiaurov was born on September 13, 1929, in Velingrad, Bulgaria. He was married twice, first to Zlatina Ghiaurov from 1956 until their divorce in 1977, with whom he had two children. Later, he married opera singer Mirella Freni in 1978, and they remained married until his death.
