Norman Lumsden was an English actor best known for his role as ‘Fly Fishing’ author J. R. Hartley in the Yellow Pages advertisements. Born Norman Thompson in London on September 16, 1906, he had a diverse career spanning from commercial art to opera singing and acting.

Norman Lumsden grew up as the son of a butler and started his career as a commercial artist, designing book jackets. He later changed his name to Lumsden, adopting his mother’s maiden name. In 1952, he married Irene Palmer, and they had one child together.

Before becoming well-known as an actor, Lumsden had a successful career as an opera singer, performing at renowned venues like Covent Garden. He made his first radio broadcast for the BBC in the 1930s, after being advised to take up singing to improve his lung capacity.
