Omus was the son of Peretz Hirschbein and Esther Shumiatcher. He was married to Jessica Hirshbein for 57 years, and they had two sons, Hillel and Peretz. He moved to New York City in 1959 to study at the Juilliard School, earning a Master’s degree and working in the Hunter College Concert Bureau.
