Otto Mächtlinger

Otto Mächtlinger was an American actor best known for his performances in Rübezahl – Herr der Berge, Der Besuch der alten Dame, and Der schwarze Tanner. He was born in Reichenberg, Czechoslovakia, on April 24, 1921, and passed away in Zürich, Switzerland, on December 29, 1985.

Personal and Family Life

Otto Mächtlinger was born into a challenging environment, losing his mother at a young age. He served in World War II as a marine and experienced several near-death situations. After the war, he co-founded the Franconian Theatre, where he met his first wife, Edith, a violinist, and together they had two children, Nora and Uwe. In 1968, he married Antoinette “Toni” Siegrist, who remained his wife until his death.

Career

Mächtlinger was deeply dedicated to his craft and became a significant member of the Schauspielhaus in Zurich for ten years before joining Peter Stein to create the Schaubühne in West Berlin. He worked as a freelance actor for the latter part of his career and was known for his kind and courageous nature. He remained actively involved in theater right up to his final days, performing even when he was unable to stand due to illness.

Death and Legacy

Otto Mächtlinger passed away at the age of 64 from cancer. He continued to perform until shortly before his death, showcasing his dedication to acting.
