Patience Cleveland was the youngest of six children in her family. She attended Miss Porter’s School and graduated from Smith College, where she majored in theatre under Hallie Flanagan. Throughout her life, she was married twice, first to Peter Hobbs from 1965 to 1968 and later to Richard John Michels until 1975.

Cleveland was known for her strong character roles in both television and film.
