Pauline Hall was born on February 26, 1860, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She left school at the age of 14 to pursue a career in dance and theatre. Hall was married twice, first to Edward R. White from 1881 to 1889, and later to George Brinton McLellan from 1892 until their divorce in 1904.

Hall began her theatrical career in 1875, and by 1880, she was performing in productions by Edward E. Rice. She became well-known for her role as Gabriel in a revival of Evangeline.
