Per Aabel was an American-Norwegian actor who is best known for his roles in “En herre med bart,” “Kjærlighet og vennskap,” and “Den farlige leken.” Born on April 25, 1902, in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway, he became a respected figure in Norwegian theater and film.

Personal and Family Life

Per Aabel was the son of Hauk Aabel. He grew up surrounded by the arts, even being neighbors with the famous playwright Henrik Ibsen during his childhood. Although he was only four when Ibsen passed away, Aabel fondly remembered riding on his lap as a young boy. His early experiences likely influenced his future career in acting and theater.

Career

Aabel studied ballet in London and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He trained under the acclaimed theater director Max Reinhardt in Vienna before making his stage debut in 1931. For many years, he worked as a principal actor and teacher with prominent theater companies in Oslo. Although he had a successful theatrical career, his film appearances were relatively few.

Death and Legacy

Per Aabel passed away on December 22, 1999, in Oslo, Norway, at the age of 97 years and eight months. He is remembered as one of the oldest male actors in Norway, ranking fourth in age at the time of his death. Aabel is buried at the Oslo Western Civil Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved comic actor in Norwegian theater.
