Personal and Family Life

Born as Josef Michel Dischel into a religious Jewish family, Sturm adopted his stage name to pursue acting. He was involved with Austria’s illegal Communist Party and faced imprisonment for six months in 1935. Following Austria’s annexation by Nazi Germany, he was sent to several concentration camps but managed to survive the ordeal.

Career

After World War II, Sturm returned to acting in Vienna, performing at the New Theater in the Scala, which had ties to the Soviet occupation. In 1956, he relocated to East Berlin and continued his successful career in East German cinema and television, becoming well-known for his various roles over the years.
