Philip Dorn was an American actor, born on September 30, 1901, in Scheveningen, ‘s-Gravenhage, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands. He is best known for his roles in “Random Harvest,” “Calling Dr. Gillespie,” and “I Remember Mama.”
Personal and Family Life
Philip Dorn was married twice. His first marriage was to Cornelia Maria Twilt from 1921 until their divorce in 1930, with whom he had two children. He later married Dutch actress Marianne van Dam in 1933, and they remained together until his death in 1975.
Career Highlights
Before moving to America, Philip Dorn had success as a matinee idol in Holland and Germany. He fled to the United States before World War II, where he played many roles as anti-Nazi characters in various low-budget films. His breakthrough came when he starred as the grand duke in the German films “Der Tiger von Eschnapur” (1938) and “Das indische Grabmal” (1938). Unfortunately, an injury in 1955 led to his retirement from acting, causing him to live a more secluded life thereafter.
Death and Legacy
Philip Dorn passed away on May 9, 1975, in Los Angeles, California, due to a heart attack. He is remembered as the first Dutch actor to achieve a successful career in Hollywood and for his contributions to cinema during and after World War II.
