Gaston served as a First Lieutenant in the 306th U.S. Bomb Group, specifically the 367th Bomb Squadron of the 8th U.S. Air Force. On November 18, 1942, while piloting a B-17 Flying Fortress, he was shot down near the Ile d’Oussant in France. Captured and taken as a prisoner of war, Gaston was held at Stalag Luft 7 from December 1942 until his release in April 1945.
