Born Martin Gleeson in Dublin, Ireland, he aspired to be an actor from a young age. He came from a well-educated family and was influenced by James Joyce and American cinema. Gleeson moved to Australia before earning a theater scholarship to study in Ohio, eventually relocating to Aspen, Colorado. There, he met his wife, Mardiah, and co-founded the High Country Players.

Gleeson’s journey in Hollywood began when he moved to Los Angeles in 1968 to pursue acting full-time. It took him several years to land substantial roles, but he achieved his dream of acting alongside Burt Lancaster in Cattle Annie and Little Britches at the age of 46. He also produced and directed an adaptation of Ulysses, which has been touring since 1988.
