Born Martin Gleeson in Dublin, Ireland, he aspired to be an actor from a young age. He came from a well-educated family and was influenced by James Joyce and American cinema. Gleeson moved to Australia before earning a theater scholarship to study in Ohio, eventually relocating to Aspen, Colorado. There, he met his wife, Mardiah, and co-founded the High Country Players.

Gleeson’s journey in Hollywood began when he moved to Los Angeles in 1968 to pursue acting full-time. It took him several years to land substantial roles, but he achieved his dream of acting alongside Burt Lancaster in Cattle Annie and Little Britches at the age of 46.
