Robert Graham was married twice; first to Joey Graham, with whom he had one child, and later to actress Anjelica Huston from May 23, 1992, until his death. He was also connected to the esteemed director John Huston as his son-in-law, and he had a brother-in-law named Tony Huston. Graham was inducted into the California Hall of Fame in 2008, an honor his son Steven accepted for him due to his illness.

Robert Graham died on December 27, 2008, in Santa Monica, California. His funeral took place at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, where his own bronze doors were installed.
