Robert Owen Atcher was born to George Christopher Atcher and Mary Agnes Ray Atcher. His father was a skilled fiddle player, and the family performed Appalachian folk music and bluegrass. After moving to North Dakota when Robert was four, he learned to play guitar and perform cowboy songs. In 1947, he married Leota Atcher, and they had three children together: Robert Whitehill, Mary Christopher, and Cecily Ann. Later in life, he also performed with his second wife, Maggie, whom he married in 1947.

Career

Atcher began his career in radio, gaining popularity with his show as the Kentucky Mountain Minstrel while studying at the University of Kentucky. He recorded several hit songs in the 1940s, including “Cool Water” and “Pins and Needles in My Heart.” His television appearances included the National Barn Dance and other Chicago shows. Additionally, he ventured into politics, serving as mayor of Schaumburg, Illinois, for 16 years, where he oversaw significant community growth.
