Robin Hughes was born to Harold William Hughes and Rosa Violet Pitt. He was married twice: first to Diane Therese Pitman from 1954 to 1962, with whom he had two children, and then to Ursula Klara Binias from 1969 to 1980. During World War II, he served in the Royal Navy and was transferred from HMS Hood just before it sank in battle.
