Romy Diaz was born to Silvino and Maria Diaz. He had two siblings, Sieg and Paquito Diaz. He was also an uncle to Joko Diaz and a grandfather to Kiko Estrada. Before his acting career, he was a collegiate basketball player for the FEU Tamaraws and briefly played for the Crispa Redmanizers and Ysmael Steel Admirals in the 1960s.
