Ron Hayes was born Ronald G. Hayes on February 26, 1929, in San Francisco, California. He attended Stanford University, where he earned a degree in foreign relations. After his studies, he served as a Marine lieutenant during the Korean War. Following the conflict, he moved to San Jose, California, and worked at KSJO radio before relocating to Hollywood to pursue acting.

Throughout his life, Ron was married four times. His spouses included Joan Sturgess, Betty Endicott, Caroline Muir, and Carol Capek. He had three children: Vanessa, Peter, and Heidi.
