Rory Calhoun was born to Floyd McCown and Ina Elizabeth Cuthbert. He was married twice, first to Lita Baron from 1948 until their divorce in 1970, with whom he had three children. He later married Susan Kathleen Langely in 1971, and they remained together until his death in 1999, having one child.

Before his acting career, Calhoun worked in various jobs, including boxing and truck driving.
