Russ McCubbin was one of six children in his family. He was the son of Clarence Basil McCubbin and Pearlie Fay Hutton McCubbin. He had five siblings: Marvin, Duane, Roger, Joyce, and Mila. Russ attended Virginia Tech briefly before volunteering for military service in the U.S. Army.
