Rusty Hamer, born Russell Craig Hamer on February 15, 1947, in Tenafly, New Jersey, was the youngest of three boys in his family. His father, Arthur Walter, passed away when Rusty was just six years old. His mother, Dorothy Hamer, was a former silent film actress who encouraged her children to perform in local theater. Rusty had a brother named John Hamer, who also pursued acting.

Rusty started acting at a very young age, making his first appearance at the age of five. He landed his breakout role as Rusty Williams on The Danny Thomas Show in 1953, where he showcased his impressive comedic talent alongside well-known stars.
