Ruth Etting was born on November 23, 1896, in David City, Nebraska. She was married twice, first to Martin Snyder from 1922 until their divorce in 1937 and later to Myrl Alderman from 1938 until his death in 1966. Etting was famously known as the “Sweetheart of Columbia Records” and became a celebrated singer of the US stage, particularly recognized for the hit “You Made Me Love You.”
Death and Legacy
Ruth Etting passed away on September 24, 1978, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her life and career were celebrated for not only her talents as a singer and actress but also for her resilience in overcoming personal challenges. She was portrayed by Doris Day in the film Love Me or Leave Me (1955), which introduced her story to a new generation.
