Personal and Family Life

Ruth Kettlewell was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. B. A. Berry and the niece of Colonel W. P. Drury. She had a strong educational background, having been educated at Casterton School and later studying art in college. Ruth was married to Rev. Robert Kettlewell from 1932 until his death, which was caused by scarlet fever during active service. During World War II, she served in the Woman’s Land Army, showcasing her commitment to her country.

Career

Ruth had a rich career in acting, starting in repertory theater before moving to the West End in the late 1950s. She became known for portraying various character roles, often taking on older characters or “hags” in films. Ruth also founded a church-based theatrical group called “The St. Augustine’s Players,” dedicating much of her life to this organization. Notable performances included her role as Mrs. Paroo in “The Music Man” and appearances in “The Killing of Sister George.”
