Ruth Sprayberry

Ruth Sprayberry was an American actress who is best known for her roles in local and regional theater productions, as well as her performance as the late-night horror host “Evilun” on television shows in the 1960s.

Personal and Family Life

Ruth Sprayberry, born Ruth Jones in 1921 in Galveston, Texas, was the daughter of Robert E. Jones and Hazel Jones. She graduated from West End High School and moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where she eventually married James Paul Sprayberry in June 1944. The couple had two children, James Paul Sprayberry Jr. and Robert Sprayberry, and later settled in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1953.

Career

Ruth became a prominent figure on the local theater scene, known for her captivating performances in various productions. She played significant roles such as Blanche DuBois in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” Amanda Wingfield in “The Glass Menagerie,” and Linda in “Death of a Salesman.” Ruth also gained recognition as a layreader and member of the Marquette Reading Circle at St. Joseph’s Church.

Death and Legacy

Ruth Sprayberry passed away on July 19, 1995, in Shreveport, Louisiana, after a long illness. Her contributions to local theater and television left a lasting impact on the performing arts community, and she is remembered fondly by her family and peers.
