Sara Taft, originally named Sarah Eleanor Taft, was married twice. She first married Milton Tompkins Somers in 1914, but they divorced in 1919. Later, she married Frederick William Teschke in 1925, and they remained together until his death in 1949, having one child together.

Before pursuing her acting career, Sara worked as a reporter for Whittier News from 1920 to 1925. She became known for her performances in both films and television shows throughout the 1960s, gaining recognition for her character portrayals in various productions.
