Sheng Fu, also known as Alexander, was an American actor famous for his roles in kung fu films and comedies. He was born Chang Jing-Hsien on October 20, 1954, in Hong Kong, and is best remembered for his captivating performances in films such as “Disciples of Shaolin,” “The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter,” and “Chinatown Kid.”
Personal and Family Life
Fu Sheng was born into a wealthy family, being the ninth of eleven siblings. He was quite different from his family, showing little interest in academics or business and leaving school after just two years of secondary education. His interest in martial arts led him to the Shaw-TVB training center at age 16, where he graduated as part of the first class in 1972.
Career
Sheng Fu started his acting career at seventeen, after being discovered by director Chang Cheh. His breakout role came in the 1973 film “Police Force,” which established him as a prominent figure in the kung fu genre. Throughout his career, he starred in numerous iconic films, frequently portraying the legendary folk hero Fang Shih-Yu.
Death and Legacy
Sheng Fu tragically died on July 7, 1983, at the age of 28, from injuries sustained in a car accident. His sudden death shocked fans and the film industry alike, resulting in a state funeral attended by over 30,000 people. Fu Sheng is remembered as a pioneer of kung fu comedies and continues to be celebrated for his contributions to the genre.
