Sherman Alexander Hemsley was born on February 1, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a working-class family, with his father, William Hemsley, employed at a printing press and his mother, Arsenia Hemsley, working in factories during the war. Although he dropped out of school to join the Air Force, his interest in acting started during his school days, where he performed in plays. After serving in the military, he moved to New York City to pursue his acting career.

Career

Hemsley began his professional acting journey on the Broadway stage with “Purlie,” where he toured for a year before moving to television. In 1973, he was cast in “All in the Family” as George Jefferson, a character he played with charisma and humor. This led to a successful spin-off, “The Jeffersons,” which ran for eleven seasons and earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Throughout his career, Hemsley was known for addressing serious social issues through a humorous lens.

Death and Legacy

Sherman Hemsley passed away on July 24, 2012, in El Paso, Texas, due to complications from lung cancer.
