Born Agnes Zetterstrand on April 11, 1902, in Naugatuck, Connecticut, she was the youngest of seven children from Swedish immigrants. After her father’s unexpected death in 1911, her family faced many challenges that ultimately led them to move to Waterbury, Connecticut. Grey graduated from Wilby High School in 1919 and started her acting career at the Poli Players Stock Theater Company.
Career
Shirley Grey started acting in 1920 and became known in the theatrical scene, eventually transitioning to film. She was discovered in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1924 and found success in various film roles, especially in the late 1920s and the early 1930s. Grey starred alongside notable actors such as Bela Lugosi and Ralph Bellamy and appeared in over 45 films during her career.
Death and Legacy
After facing personal tragedies, including the loss of her son during World War II, Shirley Grey became reclusive and spent her later years in Florida, where she passed away on August 12, 1981. Her contributions to early cinema remain appreciated, with some of her films still being celebrated today.
