Sogyal Rinpoche

Sogyal Rinpoche was an American actor and Buddhist teacher who was best known for his teachings and the book “The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying.” He was born in 1947 in Kham, Tibet, and became a significant figure in modern Buddhism.

Personal and Family Life

Born Sonam Gyaltsen Lakar, Sogyal Rinpoche was recognized early in life as the reincarnation of a well-respected master, Tertön Sogyal Lerab Lingpa. He began his spiritual training under Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö, who nurtured him like a son. Rinpoche traveled to India and met the Dalai Lama, further deepening his spiritual path.

Career

After moving to the West, Sogyal Rinpoche studied at Trinity College in Cambridge, England, where he began teaching Buddhism. He played a key role in organizing the Dalai Lama’s first visit to the West and became known for communicating complex Buddhist concepts in a relatable way. In 1991, he established a Retreat Center in France, and in 1992, he published his highly acclaimed book, which sold over two million copies worldwide.

Death and Legacy

Sogyal Rinpoche passed away on August 28, 2019, in Bangkok, Thailand, due to a pulmonary embolism. His teachings left a profound impact on many students across the globe. He was also the founder of RIGPA, an international network of Buddhist centers, which continues to spread his teachings.
