Stan Duke was married to Ellen Duke from 1982 until his death in 2007, and they had three children together. He attended Coalinga College and the University of Oregon before earning a degree in speech from Lewis and Clark College. He also completed a master’s degree in theater and film at UCLA, along with some coursework for a Ph.D. at USC.

Duke was one of the first Black television journalists in Los Angeles. Despite his promising start in journalism, his career faced a setback when he was sentenced to five years in prison for the death of his estranged wife’s ex-lover in 1971.
