Stanley Holloway was born on October 1, 1890, in Manor Park, London. His father was George Augustus Holloway, a lawyer’s clerk, and his mother was Florence May Bell. He had a challenging childhood; his father abandoned the family when Stanley was only 15, prompting him to leave school and work as a carpenter and office clerk. He later pursued a singing career while participating in local choirs.

Career Highlights

Holloway began his theatrical career in 1910 and served in the British Army during World War I, performing in army revues to entertain troops. After the war, he found success in musicals and became known for his comic monologues. His big break came when he originated the role of Alfred P. Doolittle in the Broadway production of My Fair Lady. He also appeared in its film adaptation in 1964, making him one of his most iconic roles.

Death and Legacy

Stanley Holloway passed away on January 30, 1982, in Littlehampton, Sussex, following a stroke. He was buried in St Mary the Virgin Church, East Preston, West Sussex, next to his second wife, Violet Lane. Holloway left a lasting legacy through his memorable performances and contributions to theatre and film, influencing future generations of actors.
