Sugar Geise was born on December 17, 1909, in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout her life, she was married three times, to Joseph George Wright, Jack R. Fain, and Walter Morgan. She began her career as a child model and was encouraged to pursue acting by choreographer LeRoy Prinz, which led her to begin dancing in movies at the age of 13.
