She was married to famous choreographer George Balanchine from December 31, 1952, until their divorce on February 14, 1969. Despite her successful career as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, her life changed when she became ill with polio, which ended her dancing career.

Tanaquil Le Clerq passed away on December 31, 2000, in Manhattan, New York, due to pneumonia. Her remains are interred at the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York City, specifically at the St. Ignatius of Antioch Church.
