He married Ada Mae Henkel in April 1945, and together they had four children. Tex served in the US Army during World War II, achieving the rank of sergeant.

After leaving home at 15, Tex worked in a circus and later learned cowboy skills in South Dakota. He became a singing cowboy on radio, which led to offers in Hollywood. He appeared in various films during the 1930s and 1940s and was recognized for his musical talent at the New York State Country Music Hall of Fame in 2003.
