Hawkins was well-educated and earned a scholarship to Notre Dame, where he became the first African American player to achieve All-American status in the school’s history.

In addition to acting, Hawkins had a successful career in sports. He was drafted by the Lakers in the first round of the 1959 NBA draft as the team was transitioning from Minneapolis to Los Angeles. After retiring from basketball, he served as the Vice President of Communications for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1987 until his retirement in 2004.
